Garden of the Gods Sunset Thunderstorm Virga

VIRGA SUNSET | GARDEN OF THE GODS

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – USA

Colorado is home to a rare weather phenomenon know as virga. Essentially, this is what happens when rain falls from the atmosphere but evaporates before touching the ground. From a photographic standpoint, virga is visually quite stunning. Storm clouds exude long watery curtains of moisture which float across the landscape like celestial ghosts. It is even more rare that one gets to observe this phenomenon during sunset. When warm magic hour light falls across a thunderstorm, these sheets of rain turn into liquid sunshine, painting the skies with fiery colors. When a series of storms passed over Garden of the Gods on this fine summer evening, the camera was treated to a spectacular display of Mother Nature’s home grown fireworks.
