Kalalau Overlook Napali Coast

PACIFIC GATEWAY – HAWAII

KAUAI, HAWAII USA
Lush emerald foliage cascades down the 3,000ft overlook from atop Kauai’s Kalalau Valley. As this dramatic landscape makes its colossal plunge into the sapphire waters of the Pacific, soft clouds glide overhead, blurring the horizon into a magical mixture of ocean and sky. It could easily be a scene from a fairytale, a place which literally takes your breath away as you walk up to the edge of the cliff. One wrong step and you’re in for the ride of a lifetime!

Capturing this vista has definitely been a lifelong goal since I first visited the Hawaiian Islands. Year after year, the overlook has been completely socked in with clouds so dense you could scarcely see your hand in front of you. Finally, this battle of attrition is won! I knew I was in for something special as I hiked up to trail leading to the edge of the valley. Admittedly, I wasn’t prepared for such spectacular conditions, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before the clouds rolled in to swallow up the valley in a dense gray fog. Dashing along the slippery trail, I discovered a delightful break in the foliage, a swath of flowers perfectly framing the view to infinity. After frantically firing off a series of shots, the clouds which can be seen seeping into the right and left sides of the frame did in fact pour into the valley, erasing the view I had waited so long to experience. Heart racing, I knew I had finally captured the image I had been looking for…
